Or many of them, anyway, when Melvin and I toured the Upper Midwest in late-August, early-September.
Haldeman, behind the wheel, and Melvin |
Watson was along on the first and last days, and Red joined us for a Twins game. Haldeman, who made cameo appearances in 2017 and 2019, went the distance this year.
Highlights
(in chronological order)
The Deep River Grinders vs. the Vermillion Voles, playing according to the rules in place in 1858.
"Leg it, sir." |
Despite the threat of torrential rain, we ate Chicago dogs, fries, milkshakes and malts at Superdawg. A drive-in with carhops, we dined al fresco during a break in the weather.
Serendipitously, we were in St. Paul at the same time as the Minnesota State Fair. Cheese Curds! Butter carving! Kenny! Not so tricky dog tricks! Stories from outer space!
award-winning processed meats |
Waldmann Brewery, even if the "fair and handsome one" brought the wrong beer when I ordered a second round.
either the first or second time |
We also saw the Milwaukee Brewers, the St. Paul Saints and the Beloit Sky Carp; six games in six days.
Lowlights
A shorter list. Someone smashed the windows of three cars in Milwaukee, including ours...
nothing was stolen; there was some other motivation |
...and the water pump failed during our return from Minnesota.
thankfully, the dealer had a replacement in stock |
There was, of course, much more to the trip but that will hopefully suffice.
